Go Behind the Book with Roberts Essex!

Featured on WSAV+

Network: WSAV+ (Savannah, Georgia)

Format: Long-form television interview

Status: Streaming now

WSAV+ recently sat down with Savannah native Roberts Essex to talk about his debut memoir, Chance Beginnings. Over the course of the conversation, Roberts walks viewers through the world of the book and the life that shaped it. East Savannah in the 1960s. A childhood spent in a neighborhood he calls his Mayberry. A barber on the corner. A penny for grape bubble gum. A faith that became a working tool in the long process of trauma recovery rather than a costume worn for show.

The book reads like a novel because the life inside it is novel-shaped. The names have been changed to protect the innocent and a few of the guilty. The stories, the people, and the emotion are real.

"You will feel it. You'll smell the oak trees. You'll smell the small blossoms from the moss."

If you love deeply personal stories about faith, family, and resilience, this is the interview to start with. Watch the full conversation to hear Roberts share the inspiration behind the story in his own words.

When Anonymity Is Required to Share Medical Stories

Featured on the Shadow Me Next Podcast

Podcast: Shadow Me Next

Host: Ashley Love, PA-C

Guest: Roberts Essex, PA-C

Format: Long-form conversation on medicine, storytelling, and ethics

Before Roberts Essex was a debut novelist, he was a Physician Assistant. He still is. The Shadow Me Next podcast brings him on for a different kind of conversation than the book interviews. Host Ashley Love, herself a PA-C, sits down with Roberts to talk about the healthcare side of his life.

The conversation covers his early experiences in medicine, the day-to-day of working as a PA, and the critical question every clinician who writes about their work has to answer: how do you tell a real story of resilience and overcoming tragedy without crossing the line into someone else’s privacy? Anyone who has read Chance Beginnings will recognize that question. The book itself is built around the answer Roberts found.

"There's some things that are kind of telling with this character's story and the people he meets and runs into and works with. Everything in it is true."

The episode features Roberts Essex, a seasoned Physician Assistant (PA). Hosted by Ashley Love, PA-C, the conversation focuses on navigating the healthcare world, early experiences in medicine, and the critical importance of anonymity when sharing sensitive medical stories.
